Recently, the results of The Asia Book Awards 2021 sponsored by Korea Publishers Society (KOPUS) were announced, and GXNU Press Group's Technology and Civilization won the Award of the Best Asian Books of the Year (of the popular culture category).
The Asian Book Awards, formerly known as the Paju Book Awards, is one of the most important and credible awards in Asian publishing industry. This award aims to reward the outstanding achievements of Asian publishing industry and raise people’s awareness of the high-level ideas, theories and regional perspectives through the dynamic and progressive cultures of Asian countries. Since 2012, the Awards has been held for 9 times. Every year, judges from China (including Taiwan Province and Hong Kong), Japan and South Korea select and commend the most representative books of humanities and social sciences in that year. From 2021, the Paju Book Awards has been renamed the Asia Book Awards, and the "Social and Cultural Popular Book Awards" has been added into the Awards.
In this year’s selection, after several rounds of screening and reviewing meetings by nominating committees from China (including Taiwan Province and Hong Kong), Japan and South Korea, a total of 10 works were shortlisted for the final selection. Among them, Technology and Civilization published by the Group was recognized by the nomination committees and selected into "Social and Cultural Popular Books". Previously, Xinmin Shuo in the Cultural Series of Great Views, published by the Group, won the Planning Award of the Fifth Paju Book Awards.
The award-winning Technology and Civilization is the first title in the series of "Civilization Trilogy" by young political scientist ZHANG Xiaoyu, and it is known as "the Stellar Moments of Humankind with technology as the main clue in China, which is comparable to Herali's A brief History of Humankind". Born in 1987, ZHANG Xiaoyu studied at Renmin University of China, Peking University and Free University of Berlin successively. He is now a researcher at the Center for World Politics at East China Normal University and a researcher at Shanghai Academy for World Watch. In this book, from the perspective of technology drive, ZHANG Xiaoyu screened out 14 key historical moments from thousands of years of history, and gained insight into the irreversible fate of human society. The second title of the series, Commerce and Civilization: The Birth of the Modern World, has been officially published, and the last title Industry and Civilization: Games Related to the Fate of Human Species, will be published soon. The trilogy constitutes a general history to interpret the development of human civilization.
